RIVER EXPEDITION ON THE RIO PLATANO - 10 or 14 days (see a sample itinerary)

This trip was just named one of the ‘50 Tours of a Lifetime’ by National Geographic Traveler! On this trip we cross the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected wilderness in Honduras, following the course of the Plátano River. Beginning in the river’s mountainous headwaters and concluding at its outlet at the Caribbean, we will marvel at the lush tropical vegetation while floating through pristine jungle and exciting whitewater rapids. Mysterious caves, ancient archaeological sites and contact with the Pech, Miskitos and Garifuna cultures combine to make this experience an unforgettable one - clearly not a tour, but rather an expedition. Three species of monkeys, river otters, blue morphos butterflies and a multitude of parrots and macaws will be our constant companions, and with luck, we may cross paths with a tapir or jaguar. An archaeologist, a forester, and a biologist will accompany the group.

Miskito Coast Tour (5 days/4 nights)

This trip provides an excellent opportunity for visitors with limited time who would like to explore La Moskitia and part of the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve. During this expedition, lasting 5 days, you will see people and villages of three ethnic cultures of Honduras: Miskito, Pech and Garifuna, as well as different ecosystems such as mangroves, coastal lagoons, and tropical rain forests. We shall also cross the territory where the English pirates used to hide in the last two centuries.  This area of high cultural interaction is also famous for its beautiful scenery around the Brus  Lagoon and the extensive wetlands. A great variety of birds will delight us with their songs and elegant colors and with luck we might even see some large mammals and reptiles, such as the tapir, jaguar and crocodiles. The group will be accompanied by a naturalist and speak with local indigenous people and individuals involved in economic development.

SICRI RIVER and LA IGUANA RESERVE

WITH NATURE GUIDE (4 days/3 nights)

This tour is recommended for people with little time and who would love to discover the tropical jungles and culture of the Moskitia Coast.. Brus Lagoon, on the Mosquito Coast, is well know for its vast wetlands abundant with crocodiles, iguanas, jabirus, egrets, storks and many aquatic birds. In addition to our time around the lagoon, we will travel on the Sicri River where we’ll see Miskito indigenous villages and, as we travel upriver, we will increase the chance of seeing a tapir, cougars and monkeys as well as big birds as macaws. You can experience life in the jungle as we sleep in open thatch roof houses with Thermarest mattresses and mosquito nets and bathe in the river (with biodegradable soap, of course). This tour will be led by a professional forester.

RAFTING EXPEDITION RIO SICO

(4 days/3 nights)

Rio Sico offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy, in only four days, a great wildernes and beautiful landscape with class III and IV rapids . On the route, we will observe the frontier lifestyle of farmers and typical remote cowboy towns like San Esteban. We will camp every day in a different place and prepare our meals over an open fire. It is possible to see crocodiles and iguanas on the river bank and birds like toucans, motmots, flycatchers, falcons, hawks, and many others. This tour is led by a naturalist/forester.

We offer several existing expeditions to Honduras in conjunction with the Mesoamerican Ecotourism Alliance.
